Do You Actually Need Electrolytes? Hydration, Sodium and Training Performance Explained

Why water alone isn't always enough, what electrolytes actually do, and when you genuinely need them versus when you don't.

Do You Actually Need Electrolytes? Hydration, Sodium and Training Performance Explained Do You Actually Need Electrolytes? Hydration, Sodium and Training Performance Explained

Dehydration hurts performance before you notice you're thirsty. Cramping, fatigue and a drop in focus usually start with an electrolyte deficit, not just a water deficit, which is why plain water alone doesn't always fix how you feel mid-session.

Here's what electrolytes actually do, when you need them, and when you don't.

What Are Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals (mainly sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium) that carry an electrical charge and are essential for muscle contraction, nerve signalling and fluid balance. You lose them through sweat, and the harder and longer you train, the more you lose.

Beast HYDRO combines a full electrolyte matrix with CocoMineral® coconut water extract and RedNite® beetroot concentrate, which also supports nitric oxide production and blood flow during training.

Why Water Alone Isn't Always Enough

Sweat isn't just water. It carries sodium and other electrolytes out with it. Replacing only the water without the electrolytes can leave you under-replaced on the minerals your muscles and nervous system actually need to function properly, which is part of why plain water sometimes doesn't resolve cramping or fatigue during long or hot sessions.

When You Actually Need Them

Not every session needs an electrolyte drink. A 30-minute gym session in a temperate environment is unlikely to create a meaningful deficit that water can't handle. Electrolytes earn their place when sessions are long, intense, hot, or heavy sweaters are involved: think strongman training, endurance work, or anything pushing well past an hour.

Common Myths

  • "You need to drink a gallon of water a day." Fluid needs vary by bodyweight, activity level and climate. A flat daily target ignores all of that.
  • "Cramping is always caused by dehydration." Electrolyte imbalance, fatigue and training load all contribute. Water alone doesn't fix every cause.
  • "Electrolyte drinks are just sugar and salt." Some are. The American College of Sports Medicine's position stand on fluid replacement points to sodium, and often other electrolytes, as genuinely necessary for sessions involving heavy or prolonged sweat loss, not just flavouring.1

Eddie's take: "In strongman, dehydration ends your session before your muscles ever give out. I don't wait until I'm thirsty. Electrolytes go in during the session, every session, not as an afterthought."
