What's the Actual Difference?

Creatine monohydrate is creatine bound to a water molecule, the most researched form by a huge margin. Creatine HCl (hydrochloride) binds creatine to hydrochloric acid, which genuinely does make it more soluble in water. The marketing leap is assuming that better solubility automatically means better absorption or effectiveness in the body. It doesn't follow, and the research doesn't support it either.

What the Evidence Says

A comprehensive review of novel creatine forms, including HCl, found no evidence that any alternative form outperforms monohydrate for muscle creatine uptake, strength or performance outcomes. Monohydrate remains the form with the largest body of supporting research by a wide margin, with HCl's advantages limited to solubility in a glass of water, not physiological performance.¹

Why Monohydrate Remains the Gold Standard

Research volume. Decades of trials, consistent dosing protocols, and a well-understood safety profile. HCl has a fraction of the research behind it.
Cost. Monohydrate is cheap to produce at high purity. HCl commands a premium price for a marketing claim, not a performance advantage.
