What Is Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a root extract used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, classified as an adaptogen: a compound proposed to help the body regulate its response to physical and psychological stress. It doesn't sedate and it doesn't stimulate. It works on the stress response itself.
What Is KSM-66?
KSM-66 is a specific, patented, full-spectrum ashwagandha root extract, standardised to a minimum of 5% withanolides (the compound group believed responsible for ashwagandha's effects). It's the most clinically studied ashwagandha extract on the market, with the largest body of human trial data behind it. Not all ashwagandha on shelf is equal: extraction method, plant part used, and withanolide standardisation vary enormously between brands, which is why the research is specific to named extracts like KSM-66 rather than "ashwagandha" as a generic category.
How It Works
The leading mechanism is regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the system that governs your body's cortisol response to stress. Chronically elevated cortisol is linked to poor sleep, impaired recovery and reduced training capacity. KSM-66's clinical trials consistently show measurable reductions in serum cortisol in stressed adults.1
What the Evidence Supports
- Lower cortisol under stress. Randomised, placebo-controlled trials on KSM-66 show significant reductions in serum cortisol over 60 days of supplementation in chronically stressed adults.1
- Reduced stress and anxiety scores. A systematic review of ashwagandha trials found consistent improvements in self-reported stress and anxiety measures versus placebo.2
- Strength and muscle gains in resistance-trained men. An 8-week trial found KSM-66 supplementation led to greater increases in muscle strength and size, alongside faster recovery, versus placebo in men undergoing resistance training.3
- Improved sleep quality. Several trials report better sleep onset and quality, which tracks with its cortisol-lowering effect since elevated evening cortisol is a known disruptor of sleep.
Dosage and Timing
Most of the clinical trials behind ashwagandha's effects used doses in the 300-600mg per day range of standardised KSM-66.
